Ottawa, Dec 3, 2013 – The critical issues of impaired and distracted driving will be the next topic discussed at “RCMPTalks,” a series of live, interactive videoconference taking place in classrooms across Canada.
On December 4th at 11am EST during National Safe Driving Week, grade 11 and 12 students will converse with Angeliki Souranis, President of MADD Canada, and Brad Gorski, a 28-year-old male who was injured while driving and texting. Opening remarks will be made by RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson.
“A small decision can have great consequences,” says Commr. Paulson. “Let's make the right choice before we get behind the wheel. Everyone has the right to come home safe.”
“RCMPTalks” allows students from six different Canadian classrooms per session to hold a discussion via videoconference and social media, and pose questions to guests during a 90 minute session. To accompany each video conference, learning activities and resources will be provided for teachers to deliver to students over a period of one to two weeks prior to the conference.
The following “RCMPTalks” sessions have also been scheduled for 2013/14:
- Impaired & Distracted Driving (French) – Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
- Bullying & Cyberbullying (French) – Wednesday, February 26, 2014 on Pink Shirt Day.
Through this initiative, the RCMP aims to empower youth to take action on important social issues. Supporting youth is one of the RCMP's strategic priorities; we work with our community partners to address and prevent key risk factors that can result in young people becoming either victims of crime or offenders.
