January 24, 2014 – Hamilton, ON – Status of Women Canada
The Government of Canada today announced support for a project to advance more women into non-traditional careers. The announcement was made by Susan Truppe, Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women, on behalf of the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women.
The Hamilton YWCA is receiving funding to advance the recruitment and retention of women in the construction and manufacturing industries. The organization will establish an Advisory Committee with women apprentices, industry partners, training institutions, and other community groups. The project includes a review of existing tools and practices for recruiting and retaining female employees in non-traditional employment, as well as the development of a sector-specific action plan to increase the representation of women in the targeted fields.
This project was selected through the Government of Canada’s recent call for proposals entitled Opening Doors: Economic Opportunities for Women.
