Clare Machine Works Limited, a machine shop that also specializes in the research and development of marine, and oil & gas industry technology, has developed a new lathe system to help oilfield companies cut costs by re–machining drill pipes and connections in the field.
With the assistance of Lote Technologies Solutions Inc. and Petro Carbon NDT Solutions Inc., Clare Machine Works invented a portable, precise mechanical lathe that can re–face all American Petroleum Institute (API) rotary shoulder connections as well as re–bevel connections to comply with strict API standards. This mobile device is the world’s only portable machine that is capable of accomplishing this in the field, within a matter of minutes, eliminating the complex logistics and expense of sending them off–site to be serviced.
MP Greg Kerr today announced that the Government of Canada is investing a total of $55,075 to assist Clare Machine Works in the advancement of its patent–pending invention. A $43,315 repayable investment, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, is expected to result in a new concept prototype lathe, called the Beaver 4. The unit will be equipped with Satellite Monitor and Actuate Response Telemetry (SMART), allowing it to be remotely monitored and controlled, and new electromechanical operating components to improve the unit’s performance.
Further support of an $11,760 non–repayable investment, through ACOA’s Productivity and Business Skills program, will assist the company in contracting the necessary technical expertise to commercialize the upgraded lathe to the oil and gas industry worldwide.
The National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC–IRAP) is also providing advisory services, as well as funding of up to $49,065 to further develop and enhance this technology.
