Ottawa, January 6, 2014 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to mark the celebration of Christmas by Christians observing the Julian calendar:
“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I want to take this opportunity to extend my warmest wishes to Christians of the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches who are celebrating Christmas this week.
“Whether it’s celebrated on December 25th or in early January, Christmas is always one of the most important holidays of the year for Christians, as it honours the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with family and friends, attend religious services, and reflect on the importance of faith and hope.
“As we give thanks at Christmas for the blessings that we have in our own lives, and share those with our friends and families, we are also encouraged to act with generosity and compassion toward those in our communities who are less fortunate than ourselves and may be in need during the holiday season.
“As we begin the year 2014, I offer my very best wishes for a happy and blessed Christmas to everyone celebrating over the next few days, and a hopeful and prosperous New Year to all Canadians.”
