The Government of Canada and the government of the Republic of India have agreed to renew a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance their shared interests in the fields of earth sciences and mining, a focal point for increased bilateral cooperation and trade.
The renewed Memorandum of Understanding enhances government-to-government cooperation, encourages earth sciences and mining cooperation with the industrial sector and will provide a forum for collaboration and scientific exchanges. The potential for increased trade, investment and research partnerships in the areas of geoscience and mining between India and Canada is significant.
The renewal of this agreement, between Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the Ministry of Mines, Republic of India, will help to further cement strong relations in science and technology co-operation in an important economic subsector of the Indian and Canadian economies — earth sciences and mining.
Since the signing of the MOU in 2010, there have been exploratory discussions about mining technology with industry interested in Canada’s Green Mining Initiative. In particular, there have been discussions in the areas of waste management and processing technologies and on potential cooperative projects in the earth sciences.
Potential areas of cooperation under the renewed MOU include:
exploration geology and geophysics;
- geohazards;
- geoscientific data management and related informatics;
- international cooperation on minerals and metals issues of mutual interest;
- encouraging bilateral mining investment; and
- green mining technologies.
