In May 2007, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the launch of a federal strategy on science and technology in Canada. Under this strategy, entitled Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada’s Advantage, the government has invested more to support science, technology and innovative companies than ever before.
The Government of Canada remains focused on setting the right conditions to build knowledge, support great ideas and ensure economic growth and long-term prosperity. In the October 2013 Speech from the Throne, the government stated its intention to update the 2007 strategy. As part of this renewal process, the government has launched a consultation to solicit public input on how best to shape federal policy on science, technology and innovation.
The consultation seeks the views of Canadians on three major themes:
- Excellence in Public and Post-Secondary Research and Development
- Business Innovation
- Developing Innovative and Entrepreneurial People
The feedback will inform the development of the updated Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy to ensure that Canada remains well positioned in today's global economy for excellence, talent, and long-term prosperity. Under the current strategy, recent achievements have transformed the National Research Council, doubled the investment in the Industrial Research Assistance Program, supported research collaborations through the federal granting councils and created the new Venture Capital Action Plan.
The government is helping to promote greater commercialization of research and development and is supporting world-class discovery-driven research at all levels by building strategic collaborative relationships across all partners.
