January 7, 2014: The Government of Canada has appointed a new Chief Veterinary Officer. Dr. Harpreet S. Kochhar will lead Canada's efforts to protect animal and human health from current and emerging animal diseases. The appointment is effective immediately.
Dr. Kochhar is a veterinarian by training with a Master's degree in Veterinary Science and a PhD in biotechnology. He is an expert on animal biotechnology for the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and has worked internationally with such organizations as the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Dr. Ian Alexander, who served as Chief Veterinary Officer prior to Dr. Kochhar's appointment, has been named Executive Director of Animal Health Science for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
