Support will help to address challenges created by the Syrian conflict

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced additional support to help Jordan address development challenges arising from the Syrian conflict and the resulting influx of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, as well as respond to the threat posed by Syrian weapons and materials of mass destruction. The announcement was made in Amman, Jordan, during the last leg of the Prime Minister’s first official visit to the Middle East, from January 18-25, 2014.
The Syrian conflict has had a direct impact on neighbouring countries, creating a destabilizing situation with serious long-term effects. Canada is committed to helping Jordan respond to immediate pressing needs, in addition to assisting with long-term development and security challenges.
Today’s support for development initiatives in Jordan is aimed at promoting economic development and delivering basic services in the region, such as education to Jordanians and Syrian refugees. It is being provided through Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada’s development assistance programs.
Additional support will help Jordan to mitigate the threat posed by Syrian weapons and materials of mass destruction, through the provision of critical equipment, infrastructure, technology and training – thus helping to promote security in the region.
