Thanks to joint funding from the federal, provincial and municipal governments
Thursday, January 30, 2014 – Sarnia, Ontario
Upgrades to Sarnia's wastewater system will greatly benefit city residents and visitors thanks to a federal, provincial and municipal partnership. The completion of infrastructure improvements to the city's wastewater collection system will help reduce sewer overflow into the St. Clair River, and help to protect and restore the water quality in the river and in the Great Lakes.
The St. Clair River is a key shipping channel in the Great Lakes Seaway system that also supports extensive recreational activities, including sport fishing, boating and swimming. The wetlands and shallow open waters of the lower St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair provide essential habitat for many species and are considered some of the most important wetland areas in the Great Lakes basin.
Improvements to divert sanitary flow between East Street and Murphy road have also helped reduce basement flooding in the city's downtown area and have led to the rehabilitation of a number of streets, as well as the replacement of sewers, water and road infrastructure in the surrounding area, thereby improving the lives of residents and the value of businesses.
