February 10, 2014 – Ottawa – Transport Canada
The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today announced the appointment of Captain Michael W. Roman to the board of directors of the Pacific Pilotage Authority for a term of three years.
Captain Roman began his marine career as a seaman on cannery tenders and small tugs in the Fraser River in 1975. In 1987, he was promoted to chief officer, and in 1995 he obtained his marine pilot’s licence. Since then, he has performed a variety of roles with the British Columbia Coast Pilots Ltd. He was first elected director in 2002, where he was responsible for pilot training and examinations and worked with the Canadian Coast Guard and other stakeholders to improve operations related to navigational safety. In 2007, he became vice-president, and in 2008 became president. In these roles, Captain Roman influenced the board’s decisions on financial, governance, and business management issues. He also acted as trustee for the company’s pension and benefit plans.
Captain Roman is a member of the Canadian Merchant Service Guild acting as its vice president since 2009.
