Facility upgraded and expanded thanks to federal-provincial-municipal funding
February 28, 2014 – Brandon, Manitoba
Brandon University staff and students showed their appreciation for the new Healthy Living Centre today along with officials from all three levels of government during a celebration of the partnership that made this project possible.
The original Brandon University fitness facility was expanded by nearly 50,000 square feet. It now includes, among other features, three gymnasiums, an indoor walking/jogging track and new fitness class facilities.
Furthermore, the Centre was designed to meet the Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) requirements which would make it one of the most energy efficient facilities in Brandon.
The new building will promote healthy living among Brandon University students and area residents. It revolutionizes the University's programming potential, supports student recruitment and retention, and offers healthy living options to residents of all ages.
"Our Government is proud to promote healthy living and community involvement through this state of the art centre for students, staff and residents. Investments in Canada's public infrastructure create jobs, economic growth and improve families' quality of life across the country."
-Larry Maguire, MP for Brandon—Souris, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs, and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec
"This is an historic day for Brandon University. We celebrate the commitment of our federal, provincial and municipal governments in their collective support in bringing the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre from a long-term dream at BU into a 21st century state-of-the-art facility. With their leading support, and the commitment of alumni, students, faculty and staff and philanthropic foundations as well as individuals, this facility will serve our University, the City of Brandon, and the residents of southwestern Manitoba for many years to come."
