February 25, 2014 – Yellowknife, NWT – Office of the Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council
Minister Aglukkaq today announced funding to implement the Yellowknife Harbour Plan which includes improvements to attractions in Old Town, an area known to attract thousands of tourists each year. Improvements began in the fall of 2013 and will be completed before summer 2014.
In addition to the City of Yellowknife's investment of over $700,000 to revitalize Old Town, CanNor is investing $100,000 towards two initiatives: at the Government Dock, work will focus on improving public transit locations and bike racks as well as landscaping to create a more attractive venue for visitors; at Pilot's Monument, work will include improving traffic and pedestrian access between the commercial areas of Old Town as well as landscaping to improve gathering spaces.
