February 28, 2014 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – Western Economic Diversification Canada
The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular) and Member of Parliament for Blackstrap, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, today announced federal funding of $200,000 for Whitecap Dakota First Nation’s work commissioning the Spirit of Alliance monument that recognizes and honours the contributions of the multicultural allies who participated in the War of 1812.
Whitecap Dakota First Nation led the commemoration of the 1812 Bicentennial in Saskatchewan which included commissioning the monument. The Dakota First Nation was an ally of the British in the war. The monument recognizes the contributions of the Dakota, Métis, Francophone and Anglophone, Ukrainian, German and British Canadians whose descendants now reside in the province. The piece will also recognize the war’s importance in the development of Canada.
Located in River Landing, the monument will also serve as tourism attraction for the Chief Whitecap Trail. It will increase awareness of the trail and the historical significance of those who participated in the War of 1812. The trail runs from Lake Diefenbaker to the City of Saskatoon and represents, historically, the area where the Whitecap Dakota spent time along the Saskatchewan River.
