February 1, 2014 – Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice, Attorney General of Canada and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, and Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margaret’s, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that the Government of Canada will invest over $1.9 million in projects at small craft harbours in Nova Scotia in 2013–14.
Funding will support the following projects:
- Acceleration of construction of a breakwater wharf at Chéticamp (La Digue);
- Reconstruction of the outer section of a wharf at Lower Prospect;
- Breakwater repairs at Fox Point;
- Reconstruction of a wharf approach and construction of a service area over two years at Eastern Passage; and
- Construction of a marginal wharf at Newellton.
This is in addition to the $10.2 million announced this year for projects at small craft harbours in the province, including 12 major projects.
“Safe and efficient small craft harbours are vital to Nova Scotia’s coastal communities,” said Minister MacKay. “Through the projects announced today, our Government will ensure that harbours continue to support the fishing industry, local economies and create jobs across our province.”
“Small craft harbours contribute to the economic prosperity of communities across Nova Scotia,” said MP Keddy. “Our Government is making sure that fishermen and harbour users have harbours that are in good operating condition to support their day–to–day activities.”
