The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today issued the following statement to recognize Black History Month:
"February is recognized across Canada as Black History Month, a time when we recognize the contributions of black Canadians to the strong and diverse nation Canada has become.
"In the early years, black Canadians had to overcome great challenges. Even to enlist in the military could be a significant obstacle. Now, black Canadians have served in every branch of the military at home and abroad, during wars, conflicts and international peace support efforts. This month, we commemorate their dedication.
"From William Hall, a Nova Scotian who received the Victoria Cross for military valour for service in the British Royal Navy in 1857, to those modern men and women who have served in Afghanistan, Haiti and on other missions around the world, black Canadians have a tradition of distinguished service in uniform.
"I am proud to salute black Veterans who have put their lives on the line to defend peace and freedom, and those who continue to serve today. All year long, and particularly this month, let us honour generations of black Canadians for their sacrifices and achievements past and present"
