Canada’s Natural Resources Minister, the Honourable Joe Oliver, today concluded his official visit to Mexico, where he promoted Canada’s position as a safe, secure and reliable supplier of energy to the world. Minister Oliver travelled to Mexico from February 17 to 19, 2014.
During his trip, Minister Oliver highlighted Canada’s status as an energy and resource superpower. His activities included:
- attending the North American Leaders’ Summit in Toluca, Mexico;
- meeting with senior government officials, including Juan José Guerra Abud, Mexico’s Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, and Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, Mexico’s Secretary of Energy
- chairing a roundtable discussion with Canadian businesses operating in Mexico;
- delivering remarks at an event organized by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Mexico, together with the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade;
- announcing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Natural Resources Canada and the Government of Mexico’s National Forest Commission; this MOU will establish a framework for wildfire resource and information sharing between Canada and Mexico, and is intended to improve emergency response to wild fires in both countries; and
- highlighting the early results of Canadian technology and best practice demonstrations at a Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) facility in Mexico — innovations that could reduce GHG emissions to the equivalent of taking 280,000 cars off the roads.
