Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement congratulating Dara Howell on winning the gold medal in the inaugural women's freestyle skiing slopestyle event. The Prime Minister also congratulated Kim Lamarre, who earned the bronze medal in the same event.
"A podium finish at the Olympics requires years of hard work, dedication and commitment. I would like to congratulate Dara Howell and Kim Lamarre for winning the gold and bronze medals in women's skiing slopestyle. Canadians across the country and around the world are extremely proud.
"This is another shining moment on the world stage for our athletes. I am delighted to see our Canadian Team performing so well in Sochi."
Dara Howell was born in Huntsville, Ontario, where she currently resides. This is her first Olympic medal in her first Olympic Games. In 2013, Ms. Howell won bronze at both the Winter X Games in Aspen and the Winter X Games Europe in Tignes, France. She had previously won the bronze at the 2012 Winter X Games Europe in Tignes. Ms. Howell won her first FIS World Cup medal and captured silver at the 2013 FIS World Championships.
Kim Lamarre was born in Québec, Quebec, where she currently resides. This is Ms. Lamarre's first Olympic medal in her first Olympic Games. Previously, she won the bronze in slopestyle at the 2011 Winter X Games Europe in Tignes, France, and finished fourth at the 2011 FIS World Championships.
