Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement congratulating Dominique Maltais on winning a silver medal in Ladies' Snowboard Cross and Jan Hudec on winning a bronze medal in Alpine Skiing Men's Super–G at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi:
"Once again, Canadian athletes have shown that they are among the best in the world. It is a great pleasure today to congratulate Dominique Maltais on winning a silver medal in Ladies' Snowboard Cross and Jan Hudec on winning a bronze medal in Alpine Skiing Men's Super–G at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
"These medals are well–deserved as they represent years of hard work and dedication. They are tremendous achievements and our nation is immensely proud."
Dominique Maltais resides in Petite–Rivière–St–François, Quebec, where she was born. This is her second Olympic medal in her third Olympic Games, having won a bronze medal at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics in Ladies' Snowboard Cross. She also competed at the Vancouver Winter Games. In the same discipline, she has also earned gold at the 2012 Winter X Games, silver at the 2013 FIS World Championships, and bronze at the 2011 FIS World Championships.
Jan Hudec was born in Sumperk, Czech Republic and currently resides in Calgary, Alberta. This is his first Olympic medal in his second Olympic Games, having competed in the Vancouver Winter Games. He has also earned a silver medal in downhill at the 2007 FIS World Championships. Mr. Hudec's medal in Sochi is Canada's first podium finish in Men's Olympic Alpine Skiing in 20 years.
