Brain Awareness Week is a celebration of Canadian achievements in neurological research and of the unique and ever dynamic brain.
Canada is a global leader in neuroscience research, and has made great progress studying the function and structure of the brain.
The Government of Canada supports neuroscience research through partnerships with various organizations, including a commitment of up to $100 million to the Brain Canada Foundation. This funding partnership established the Canada Brain Research Fund, which supports neuroscience research and discoveries to improve the health and quality of life for Canadians who suffer from brain disorders.
In addition, since 2006 the government has invested $1.6 billion in neuroscience and mental health research through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. This investment is advancing knowledge and supporting the development of new ways to diagnose and treat brain diseases and injuries as well as mental illnesses. It is also facilitating Canada's participation in major research collaborations such as the International Initiative for Traumatic Brain Injury Research.
There are more than 1,000 known diseases, disorders and injuries affecting the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. Brain Awareness Week reminds us that although we have made great strides, there is a need for ongoing research.
I encourage you to observe Brain Awareness Week. Protecting this vital organ is investing in our futures.
