March is Pharmacist Awareness Month. This year, the Canadian Pharmacists Association has chosen the theme, "The Pharmacist is in" to raise awareness of the many services pharmacists offer to improve Canadians' health.
The Government of Canada recognizes the many benefits pharmacists offer as front line healthcare professionals. Pharmacists play an important role helping Canadians take their medications safely, explaining potential side effects, conducting medication reviews and suggesting alternatives to avoid dangerous interactions. They can be found in many settings -- in pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics in your community.
In recent years, pharmacists' scopes of practice have been expanding. In addition to filling prescriptions, pharmacists can, depending on the province or territory, administer flu shots and other vaccines, order lab tests, and prescribe medications for minor ailments. They can also help manage chronic diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and help people quit smoking. Their role is continuously changing to help Canadians better manage their health.
Increasing the role of pharmacists is an innovative approach towards ensuring Canadians have access to the care they need, when they need it. Health Canada remains committed to working with the provinces, territories, and stakeholders to improve the quality, sustainability and accessibility of Canada's healthcare system.
I encourage you to talk to your pharmacist and use their valuable services to help improve your health and the health of your family.
