News Release: Harper Government committed to increasing palliative care training across the country - Helping to facilitate training in palliative care for front-line healthcare providers
The Government of Canada is providing The Pallium Foundation of Canada with $3 million over three years to support palliative care training to front-line healthcare providers. This Economic Action Plan 2013 commitment will benefit communities by building the capacity of healthcare providers and thus broadening the reach of palliative care services and resources for people in Canada.
Building the Future of Palliative Care Together aims to strengthen the community of clinicians, carers, educators, administrators, volunteers, citizens and other partners. Pallium will do this by providing new and accessible educational resources, developing new collaborative working arrangements and communication networks, and training facilitators in order to enhance palliative care capacity throughout Canada, as part of a sustainable healthcare system.
The project involves three goals to improve the quality of palliative and end-of-life care for Canadians.
- Design, develop, disseminate and support a range of educational resources and clinical tools for those working to enhance palliative care.
- Create opportunities for collaboration with other organizations specializing in health professional education and palliative care, in order to avoid duplication and enhance the reach of Pallium's efforts.
- Increase the capacity of health providers and develop public engagement strategies essential to meeting the need for palliative care.
Pallium Canada will use its existing national, provincial/territorial, and professional networks to engage front-line healthcare providers, national healthcare organizations and communities to reach its goals.
The Pallium Foundation of Canada is a national palliative education community of practice, created to: advance education by improving the quality of knowledge in hospice palliative care; increase capacity of individuals, institutions and other organizations; and benefit the community by improving access to hospice palliative care services, community supports and resources for people in Canada.
