March 28, 2014 – Winnipeg – Department of Canadian Heritage
The Government of Canada today announced support for the construction of a new school–-community centre, and for the expansion of a school in Manitoba. Funding of $2.7 million will go towards the construction of a new school–-community centre to better serve the needs of students and of Thompson’s Francophone community, while $1.5 million will support the expansion of l’École Taché and addition of community spaces.
In addition to supporting minority-language learning in Manitoba, the new school–-community centre will serve all members of Thompson’s Francophone community by making community spaces available. Students and members of the community could have access to their new school–-community centre by March 2016.
L’École Taché will be able to increase its early childhood and daycare services. In addition, a multipurpose room will be available for use by members of the minority Francophone community.
Part of the funding announced today comes from the Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013–-2018: Education, Immigration, Communities.
“Our Government made a firm commitment to support minority official-language communities. Today, I am proud to announce our Government’s support for these two very important projects, which will encourage continued community development. I am delighted that our Government is investing in and supporting Franco-Manitoban vitality.”
—Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
“La Commission scolaire franco-manitobaine thanks the federal government and, particularly, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Language Shelly Glover, for their commitment and much-appreciated contribution to these two building projects—the construction of the École communautaire La Voie du Nord, in Thompson, and the major expansion of l’École Taché. It goes without saying that the school community and the surrounding French community will greatly benefit from the implementation of these projects.
