Berlin, Germany - 27 March 2014
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today concluded a successful two-day visit to Munich and Berlin, Germany, where he met with Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, Joachim Gauck, President of Germany, and Horst Seehofer, Premier of Bavaria. The Prime Minister’s visit to Germany was the last leg of a broader European trip, which included a bilateral program in the Netherlands, a stop in Ukraine, participation at the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague, as well as a meeting with G-7 counterparts, where leaders took a strong, united stance against Russia’s illegal military action in Ukraine.
In Munich, the Prime Minister – along with Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade – met with members of the Bavarian Business Association to promote trade and investment relations between Canada and Germany. They also met with a number of Canadian and German investors and companies who will be in a position to take full advantage of the many benefits of the Canada-EU Trade Agreement.
While in Berlin, the Prime Minister and the Chancellor discussed a range of bilateral issues, including how to maximize the commercial benefits that will arise from the Canada-EU Trade Agreement. They also discussed global economic issues, including the European economy, next steps in coordinating a response to the situation in Ukraine, as well as other pressing international and security issues. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Minister of Industry James Moore and Minister Fast during his visit to Berlin.
