Through its public geoscience, NRCan ensures that government and industry can make informed decisions about resource development. By having a better understanding of where new mineral deposits are located and their potential size, investment risk is minimized and exploration and mining projects have a better chance to get off the ground.
NRCan has released 33 new geoscience-based publications including 13 products from the Targeted Geoscience Initiative and 20 from the Geo-Mapping for Energy and Minerals program.
Targeted Geoscience Initiative-4 (TGI-4):
Renewed in 2010, Natural Resources Canada’s Targeted Geoscience Initiative-4 (TGI-4) is a national program that provides industry with new ore deposit models and innovative tools for discovery of deep deposits.
TGI-4’s geoscience knowledge products have supported efficient and effective exploration around the mining-dependent communities across Canada. To date, TGI-4 has released over 280 publicly available geoscience publications.
This cutting-edge research provides important new scientific knowledge that will positively impact the exploration of precious metals such as gold and platinum, as well as base metals such as nickel, chrome and zinc. It will also support the creation of new methods for discovering buried mineral deposits using indicator mineral and seismic surveying methods.
The new material includes:
- Data and results from the innovative Lalor Seismic Experiment taking place at Manitoba’s Lalor mine camp, in which TGI-4 invested over $2.7 million in 2013.
- Public geoscience releases that support the development of new mineral deposit models that are the basis for future precious and base metal exploration.
- Databases of physical and chemical properties of mineral occurring in soils that will more efficiently direct prospectors toward buried precious and base metal deposits.
Geo-Mapping Energy and Minerals (GEM):
The Geo-Mapping for Energy and Minerals program (GEM) focuses on modernizing geoscience knowledge in the North.
GEM’s products provide geoscientific knowledge for poorly known parts of Canada’s North that inform industry, governments and communities about potential mineral resources. The newly released products released include:
- New geophysical maps created from an aeromagnetic survey for part of the Boothia Peninsula in the Taloyoak area of Nunavut, which provide the first modern data for this area and will guide future mapping and exploration.
- New geophysical maps for part of the Nunavut mainland in the Duggan Lake area, which provide modern coverage for an area with significant potential for gold, silver copper and zinc.
- New geological maps for parts of the southern Northwest Territories that will guide exploration for diamonds, base metals and iron ore-copper-gold deposits.
