Local athletic track and soccer field receiving a much needed facelift

The citizens of Neguac and surrounding communities will soon have access to a renovated athletic track and soccer field thanks to investments by the Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick. Plans are under way to renovate the community’s sporting infrastructure which will help the Village of Neguac host more sporting events, bring more visitors to the region and improve the local economy.
Tilly O’Neill Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, today announced, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (ACOA), support to the Village of Neguac along with the Honourable David Alward, Premier of New Brunswick. Serge Robichaud, MLA for Miramichi Bay-Neguac and Village of Neguac officials also took part in the event.
The project involves renovations to the village’s 400 metre athletics track and its central soccer field located on the grounds of the Centre scolaire-communautaire Lafontaine in Neguac. Earthwork, excavation, a new synthetic surface, asphalt paving and the installation of a drainage system for surface water, perimeter fencing and lighting are all part of this project.
The Government of Canada is investing $150,000 through ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund. The Province of New Brunswick is also investing $150,000 through the Regional Development Corporation, while the Village of Neguac is contributing $45,000.

- The village of Neguac has the distinction of being known as the “Capitale des Savoie.” It was founded by Jean Savoie in 1756 and was incorporated in 1967. The village has a population of 1,678.
- The main economic activities in the local area are commercial fishing, of species such as lobster, and oyster farming. The renowned Maison Beausoleil’s oysters positions Neguac as Atlantic Canada’s Oyster Hub.
- The Association des Loisirs St-Bernard Inc. encourages and develops recreational activities within the Village of Neguac and coordinates use of the sports facilities in the area.
- In August 2014, the Village of Neguac is hosting events of the New Brunswick Indian Games held in the neighboring First Nation of Esgenoopetitj.
