The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that officers in the Southern Ontario Region seized several firearms during the month of March.
On March 10, 2014, Mishell McPherson, a 47-year-old resident of Minnesota sought entry into Canada at the Rainbow Bridge and was referred for a secondary examination. During the examination, border services officers discovered an undeclared semi-automatic pistol and 92 rounds of ammunition in the rear of the vehicle.
On March 11, 2014, during a secondary examination at the Queenston Bridge, border services officers discovered an undeclared semi-automatic pistol in the back seat area of Olexandr Yeremenko’s, a 41-year-old man from Georgia, pick-up truck.
Both have been charged under the Customs Act with making false and deceptive statements, evading compliance and smuggling.
On March 23, 2014, border services officers at the Ambassador Bridge discovered an undeclared revolver and six rounds of ammunition on the floor in the rear of a vehicle during a secondary examination. George McDerment, a 65-year-old man from West Virginia has been charged by the CBSA under the Customs Act with non-report of goods and possession of unlawfully imported goods.
Finally on March 24, 2014, during a secondary examination of a truck at the Queenston Bridge, border services officers discovered an undeclared handgun in the cab. Tim Covert, a 34-year-old man from Florida plead guilty on March 31 to a CBSA charge under the Customs Act for making false and deceptive statements and evading compliance.

- CBSA officers in Southern Ontario Region seized 117 firearms (non-restricted, restricted and prohibited) and 199 prohibited weapons in 2013.
- All travellers are required to declare all goods they are bringing into Canada, including any firearms and weapons in their possession.
- Failure to declare goods (including firearms) and other Customs Act contraventions may lead to prosecution in a court of law.
- Travellers may not import prohibited weapons or prohibited devices into Canada. This includes items such as pepper spray, mace, brass knuckles, switchblades, stun guns, silencers and replica firearms.
