Ottawa, April 20, 2014 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, issued the following statement marking the celebration of Easter in both the Eastern and Western Christian churches:
“Easter is one of the oldest and holiest holidays of the Christian faith, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion and death, and marking a new hope in the faith of everlasting life.
“Christians celebrate Easter, also known by the name Pascha, as mankind’s ultimate salvation from sin and death, proceeding historically from the Israelite celebration of Passover. This commemoration of atonement with God is, among Christians, the most important feast day of the year.
“During this Easter season, I encourage all Canadians to be mindful of how blessed we are to live in this great nation of Canada. It is also an opportunity to reflect on Canada’s Judaeo-Christian heritage, and on the contributions made by our country’s Christian faithful throughout our 400-plus-year history.
“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I extend my warmest wishes for a happy Easter.”
