Ottawa, April 14, 2014 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, and the Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State for Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to mark the celebration of Vaisakhi:
“Sikhs in Canada and around the world will celebrate Vaisakhi today, one of the most important observances in Sikhism.
“This day marks the founding of the Khalsa Sikh community in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh guru. The beginning of a new year and new harvest season is also celebrated on Vaisakhi in many parts of India and around the world. The celebrations in Canada focus on observances at Gurdwaras, and gatherings with family and friends at vibrant parades and processions known as Nagar Kirtans.
“Canada is home to one of the largest Sikh populations outside of India. The Sikh community has made many contributions to our country, in all areas of endeavour, and has contributed significantly to Canada’s rich diversity and heritage. I encourage Canadians to reflect today on their contributions to helping build our country.
“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating Vaisakhi.”
“Vaisakhi di lakh lakh vadhai!”
