National Research Council advances Canada's Digital Economy

Collaborative research supports information and communications technologies industry

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) is reaching significant milestones as progress continues with its Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) programs. The five fully operational research programs are designed to assist industry in developing and commercializing innovative technologies.

The ICT programs provide Canadian firms with coordinated access to expertise and state-of-the-art facilities. With this support, companies of all sizes can maximize their opportunities to successfully introduce new solutions to national and global markets.

The programs are encouraging the growth and competitiveness of Canada’s ICT sector in advanced analytics, individualized learning technologies, semi-conductor-based photonics, next-generation electronics and printable electronics.

Quick Facts

In Advanced Photonics Components, NRC worked with TeraXion to develop an optical transmitter that sends information across the global optical fiber communications network at higher speeds than previously possible. This technical advance establishes TeraXion as a major player in the global telecommunications market and will allow telecommunications network operators to support the increasing demands of internet and mobile communications users around the world.
In Gallium Nitride Electronics, NRC has recently fabricated electrical devices that provide high performance fail-safe operation and devices useful in handling high voltages. Both these devices also have improved efficiency, which will lead to substantial electrical power savings.
In Multimedia Analytic Tools for Security, NRC researchers and industrial partners have successfully achieved automated reading of open source Twitter feeds, extracting facts, meaning and author sentiment. This integrated software could be applied to tweets on various topics, such as healthcare and public events.
In Learning and Performance Support Systems, NRC recently worked with the Organisation internationale de la francophonie to create a French-language version of the Massive Open Online Learning tool by adapting the software for multilingual delivery.
In its first year of operation, NRC’s Printable Electronics program and partners have reached a significant milestone in the field of advanced materials and functional inks. The innovative materials enable printing high performance semiconductors directly. This world-class achievement will give Canadian companies a competitive advantage in printing logic for smart packaging. Licensing discussions are ongoing to accelerate the commercialization of the technology.
