The Canadian Coast Guard advises residents and visitors of the Lower North Shore that the spring icebreaking operations are presently underway in the ports of the sector.
The CCG would like to remind the public of the dangers associated with its icebreaking operations and the need to exercise caution when icebreakers are operating nearby.
Fractured ice may become hazardous and unstable, and may create a danger for anyone in the area. Facilities on the ice may also be affected by icebreaking operations.
The Coast Guard strongly recommends that pedestrians, fishers and snowmobilers leave the ice when they see an icebreaker in the immediate vicinity.
CCG icebreakers have a red hull with a transverse white band and a white funnel bearing a maple leaf.
