Ottawa, Ontario – The following statement was released today by Lucie Tedesco, Commissioner of the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) following the announcement of Canada’s new Financial Literacy Leader by Minister of State (Finance) Kevin Sorenson:
“I am delighted by the appointment of Jane Rooney as Canada’s first Financial Literacy Leader, effective immediately.
Today, the Government of Canada has moved forward with the first recommendation of the Task Force on Financial Literacy, appointing the Financial Literacy Leader under a new legislated provision enacted in 2013.
With the creation of the position of a national Financial Literacy Leader within the FCAC, Ms. Rooney will lead the implementation of the national strategy on financial literacy and will work with the many stakeholders working in this field to achieve shared goals.
With the Agency’s mandate expanded to include efforts to coordinate and collaborate on financial literacy initiatives across the country with the objective of strengthening the financial literacy of Canadians, under the leadership of the Leader, FCAC will continue to work with multiple partners and collaborators from across the country to develop resources and tools to address the needs of various segments of the Canadian population.
The Agency will also work to avoid duplication of efforts by maximizing the impact of effective financial literacy programs, tools and resources that exist and increase consumer awareness of these resources.”
Before being appointed Financial Literacy Leader, Ms. Rooney was the Director of Financial Literacy and Consumer Education with the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada.
