Company set to increase production of submersible holographic microscope for international markets
May 29, 2014 – Halifax, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
With its sleek design and impressive specs, 4Deep Inwater Imaging’s submersible holographic microscope is an attractive tool for water analysis requirements across the globe.
With a concept developed in the Physics Department at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 4Deep has gone from a proprietary algorithm to a microscope that can be submerged 6,000 metres below the ocean’s surface.
This relatively new company specializes in dynamic fluid microscopy, which is used to obtain 3D analysis of micro-organisms/particles that are difficult to study using conventional microscopy technology. 4Deep‘s submersible microscope provides real-time, continuous onsite monitoring of water quality and has the capacity to analyze minute particles and track their movement. 4Deep’s technology provides superior images faster, and can be deployed to substantially greater depths than other products currently on the market.
The Government of Canada is investing $191,499 to support the expansion of 4Deep’s production capacity and international marketing activities.
Quick Facts:
- Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia and incorporated in 2009, 4Deep’s proprietary technology won the 2011 Innovation Award from Microscopy Today.
- 4Deep is the winner of the 2010 Discovery Award for Innovation.
- The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, has contributed $127,499 to the project.
- The National Research Council of Canada has contributed $64,000 through their highly-regarded Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP), which focuses on accelerating growth for small-and medium-sized Canadian enterprises through innovation.
Quotes:
“4Deep's submersible holographic microscope is representative of Atlantic Canada's expertise in the marine sciences and the region's ability to develop solutions for the oceans sector worldwide. Our Government's support will enable 4Deep to increase production and export into new markets. The true value of this product is its versatility in a variety of contexts—including oil and gas, biomedical, aquaculture and municipal water.”
- The Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency)
“The Government of Canada, and specifically ACOA and NRC-IRAP, have supported us every step of the way. This funding will allow us to increase production of our submersible microscopes and create the demonstration units necessary to market our technology. We have already partnered with a number of universities and research institutes in Canada and abroad and know that we have a great product. This repayable investment will enable us to properly market it to other areas, such as Asia, where the technology will be extremely useful and in high demand.”
