Today, the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, launched calls for proposals for the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), the International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI), and the 2015-2020 Volunteer Cooperation Program.
IYIP and IAYI – Calls for Proposals
The Government of Canada, through Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, launched today calls for proposals for the International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) and the International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative.
Both international youth internship programs offer young Canadians the opportunity to acquire skills for future employment as well as to gain international development experience.
The calls for proposals are open to Canadian organizations and private companies with at least two years of experience in working in the area of international development. The calls for proposals will fund initiatives of as much as two years in length that address the needs of local partner organizations and contribute to the advancement of Canada’s international development objectives.
Once partner organizations have been selected under these two calls for proposals, young Canadians between the ages of 19 and 30, and Aboriginal youth between the ages of 18 and 35, will be able to apply for internship opportunities under the IYIP and the IAYI programs, respectively, later in the year.
Value of the Calls for Proposals
The IYIP call for proposals is for as much as $11.9 million over two years. The call for proposals will fund initiatives lasting as long as two years and support between 5 and 20 interns per organization per year.
The IAYI call for proposals is for as much as $4.2 million over two years. The call for proposals will fund initiatives lasting as long as two years and support between 5 and 10 interns per organization per year.
Eligibility
Both calls for proposals are open to Canadian organizations and private companies incorporated in Canada with a minimum of two years of experience working in international development. To be eligible, Canadian organizations responding to the calls for proposals must partner with a local developing-country organization.
Canadian organizations that do not meet the eligibility requirements may form a consortium with other organizations meeting all required eligibility criteria. Canadian organizations may submit only one application for each of the calls for proposals.
For the IAYI call for proposals, stronger consideration will be given to proposals submitted by an Aboriginal organization.
Guidelines
All proposals must be aligned with at least one of the department’s five priorities for international assistance, which are:
- increasing food security;
- securing the future of children and youth;
- stimulating sustainable economic growth;
- advancing democracy; and
- ensuring security and stability.
Proposals must also integrate the department’s three crosscutting themes of:
- increasing environmental sustainability;
- advancing equality between women and men; and
- strengthening governance.
The deadline for proposal submissions is July 9, 2014.

Volunteer Cooperation Program – Call for Proposals
The Government of Canada, through Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, launched today a call for proposals for the 2015-2020 Volunteer Cooperation Program.
The Volunteer Cooperation Program aims to improve the economic and social well-being of poor and marginalized communities in selected countries. It has two main objectives: 1) to increase the capacity of developing-country partners to deliver sustainable development results in response to local needs, by making use of the skills and expertise of qualified Canadian volunteers, and 2) to enhance the participation of Canadians in Canada’s sustainable development efforts.
Value of the Calls for Proposals
The 2015-2020 Volunteer Cooperation Program call for proposals is valued at up to $250 million over five years.
Eligibility
The Volunteer Cooperation Program call for proposals is open to Canadian organizations whose primary mandate is volunteer-sending. These organizations must use volunteers as their main mechanism for delivering development results abroad. Organizations must also be legally incorporated in Canada with a minimum of 3 years of experience in volunteer sending in developing countries.
Canadian organizations that do not meet the eligibility requirements may form a consortium with other organizations meeting all required eligibility criteria. Canadian organizations may submit only one application to the Volunteer Cooperation Program call for proposals, either on their own or as the lead in a consortium.
Guidelines
All proposals must be aligned with at least one of the department’s five priorities for international assistance, which are:

- advancing democracy; and
- ensuring security and stability.
Proposals must also integrate the department’s three crosscutting themes of:

Preference will be given to proposals that include innovative elements. Innovation is defined as new or improved solutions to international development challenges.
Preference will also be given to initiatives that increase diaspora involvement.
The deadline for proposal submissions is July 16, 2014.
