Funding awarded to train and develop highly qualified personnel for space science and technology
May 21, 2014 - Montréal, Quebec - Canadian Space Agency
Today, Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, announced support for the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) through a contribution of $250,000 over three years for space science and technology projects.
The three-year grant will provide an opportunity for graduate students to acquire hands-on experience in designing, building, testing and flying scientific instruments and technologies on a nanosatellite and analyzing the resulting data.
This project aims to study and measure the extensive formation of very thin ice clouds specific to the coldest Arctic conditions. It will help students investigate innovative space technologies and give them the training to keep Canada at the forefront of space research.
This investment is aligned with the "Inspiring Canadians" principle of working with industry, universities and colleges to recruit, support and retain highly qualified personnel, which was outlined in Canada's Space Policy Framework, released in February 2014.
Today's news release is the result of an Announcement of Opportunity published on the Canadian Space Agency's (CSA) website on November 8, 2013. Total funding for all recipient projects at universities across Canada, including UQAM, is $2 million.
