Local communities benefiting from infrastructure funding that upgraded community facilities

The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and the Honourable Susan Sullivan, provincial Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, today announced federal and provincial investments totaling close to $207,000 for communities in Labrador that supported improvements to five key pieces of community infrastructure.
The Town of Forteau, Rigolet Inuit Community Government, Labrador Heritage Society, Town of L’Anse au Loup and Town of L’Anse au Clair have completed necessary upgrades to their community facilities to better serve the needs of residents and visitors.

- The Government of Canada invested a total of $130,813 in these five projects through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador invested $76,086.
- The Town of Forteau received $5,099 (federal) and $4,959 (provincial) to upgrade the community centre in the Southern Labrador town. The project included the purchase of audio equipment, storage racks and chairs.
- The Rigolet Inuit Community Government received $86,428 (federal) and $63,127 (provincial) to extend an existing boardwalk in the community.
- The Labrador Heritage Society received $10,704 (federal) and $8,000 (provincial) to upgrade and improve the waterfront/marine area in North West River, including the enhancement of the Sunday Hill Park and improvements to the existing trail network.
- The Town of L’Anse au Loup received $18,787 (federal) to upgrade an existing hiking/ski trail for use as a snowshoe trail. The project included an expanded trail to allow extra space for snowshoeing, improvements to an existing bridge, widening of the trail and general improvements to ensure safety of its users.
- The Town of L’Anse au Clair received $9,795 (federal) to renovate the existing community centre in the town with new gyproc, a drop ceiling, flooring and electrical upgrades.
- Through Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government of Canada helped modernize Canada’s infrastructure by committing $150 million over two years for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
- ACOA has been delivering the CIIF in Atlantic Canada with an allocation of $16.6 million, of which $3,864,000 was allotted to projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.
