Local communities benefiting from infrastructure funding that upgraded community facilities

The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and the Honourable Susan Sullivan, provincial Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, today announced federal and provincial investments totaling more than $205,000 for three communities in western and northern Newfoundland that supported improvements to key pieces of community infrastructure.
The Town of Massey Drive, Association Régional de la Cote Ouest Incorporée and St. Anthony Basin Resources have completed necessary upgrades to their community facilities to better serve the needs of residents and visitors.

- The Government of Canada invested a total of $92,819 in these three projects through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador invested $113,063.
- The Town of Massey Drive received $7,016 (federal) to upgrade and renovate an existing portion of the Town Hall which is used by many community groups for various functions.
- Association Régional de la Cote Ouest Incorporée (ARCO) received $22,566 (federal) and $27,962 (provincial) to upgrade and improve two community centres located in the communities of Cape St. George and Mainland. The facility in Cape St. George had structural repairs to the crawl space, improvements to the washrooms and kitchen, and saw general improvements to the building’s interior and fitness facility. The centre in Mainland was upgraded with additional storage space, new exercise equipment for an existing fitness facility, improvements to the community kitchen and fencing around an existing basketball court. ARCO contributed $12,248 towards the project.
- St. Anthony Basin Resources Inc. (SABRI) received $63,237 (federal) and $85,101 (provincial) to upgrade several existing trails in the region, install gangplanks at the L’Anse aux Meadows docking facility, prepare an area at L’Anse aux Meadows for the donated Leif Erikson statue, install necessary signage and update the local trail guide. SABRI contributed approximately $178,000 towards the project.
- Through Economic Action Plan 2012, the Government of Canada helped modernize Canada’s infrastructure by committing $150 million over two years for the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
- ACOA has been delivering the CIIF in Atlantic Canada with an allocation of $16.6 million, of which $3,864,000 was allotted to projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.
