Ottawa - His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, is pleased to announce the creation of the Governor General’s Medal in Landscape Architecture (GGMLA). This award will be the highest honour bestowed by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA).
The creation of this new medal coincides with this year’s celebration of CSLA’s 80th anniversary. The first nomination process for the Medal will be held in 2015, with the inaugural presentation taking place in 2016, during the next Governor General’s Medal in Architecture ceremony, held at Rideau Hall. The governor general’s awards are created to celebrate the arts, humanities, sciences and sports. More than 60 awards and trophies bear the names of governors general. Most of these awards are administered by independent organizations, and some are still presented by the governor general.
Founded in 1934, the CSLA is a professional organization and counts over 1 900 landscape architects as members, who represent provincial and territorial associations, as well as academic programs across the nation. As the voice of the profession in Canada, the CSLA is an advocate for its members on issues such as urban renewal, sustainable development and cultural heritage.
