The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today delivered keynote remarks to the 2014 International LNG in BC Conference in Vancouver, B.C. Minister Rickford highlighted Canada’s position as a global energy leader and the importance of British Columbia’s liquefied natural gas opportunities to address global energy demand.
Minister Rickford emphasized that market access for Canada’s energy products, including natural gas, remains a top priority for the Government of Canada. He discussed the strength of the Canadian economy and why Canada represents a secure and responsible source of energy to the world.
Minister Rickford also highlighted Canada’s efforts to support the responsible development of the energy industry, including new measures that build on our world-class marine and pipeline safety systems and strengthen the participation of Aboriginal Peoples in development opportunities.

- Canada is the world’s fifth-largest producer of natural gas, with marketable natural gas resources estimated at up to 1,300 trillion cubic feet — over 200 years of supply at current rates of production.

- World energy demand will increase by 33 percent by 2035. The fast-growing economies of China, India and the Middle East will be the primary drivers, accounting for more than 59 percent of the increase in global energy demand. India’s energy needs alone will double over this period.
- The Conference Board of Canada estimates that potential growth in British Columbia’s natural gas sector alone could attract $180 billion in new investment and create 54,000 jobs per year between 2012 and 2035.
- Each Canadian LNG proposal will be subject to a thorough environmental assessment and regulatory review to ensure it can be developed safely.
