OTTAWA – As part of Canada’s National Day of Honour and in recognition of those who fought, those who fell, and to salute all those who contributed to Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, the Canadian Armed Forces will conduct a parade involving military personnel and vehicles along Wellington Street between the Canadian War Museum and Parliament. Artillery guns will also fire a 21-gun salute, from the lawns of Parliament Hill on Friday 9 May, 2014.
Wellington Street will be closed east of Booth Street to Elgin Street from 12:20 p.m. on May 9 until the parade arrives on Parliament Hill at approximately 1:00 p.m. There is a possibility it may be closed throughout the event until 2:15 p.m. if there is a larger than expected number of spectators.
Wellington Street, between Elgin and Bank Street will close again from 7:00 p.m. to approximately 8:00 p.m. in order to allow the CH-147 Chinook Helicopter to take off from Parliament Hill.
Local residents are advised they may hear loud noise caused by the firing of artillery rounds as part of a 21-gun salute. The noise is expected to start at 1:00 p.m., with 10 second intervals, lasting for approximately two minutes.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend the National Day of Honour event on Parliament Hill. The public viewing area can be found on the south side of both the East and West lawns. Following the official National Day of Honour parade, the static displays of military equipment will be available until 4:00 p.m. The public will be able to speak with Canadian Armed Forces members and see the equipment up close.
