May 1st, 2014 – Montreal – National film Board of Canada
Fourteen directors… eleven remixes… eight countries on four continents… one counter-culture and interactive experience.
From May 8 to June 19, 2014, Montreal's Place des Arts will help celebrate the 75th anniversary of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) with the world premiere of the interactive installation The Devil's Toy Redux, inspired by Claude Jutra's 1966 NFB skateboarding film, The Devil's Toy.
In this installation, Jutra's groundbreaking work is joined by eleven new short films by directors from around the world in an immersive exploration of global skate culture. Participants will be able to witness the evolution of skate culture across the globe through a multiplicity of lenses, by navigating the content while riding a real skateboard.
The Devil's Toy Redux installation will travel to other Canadian cities later this year as part of the NFB's anniversary activities. Those who can't make it to Place des Arts can experience The Devil's Toy Redux online.
Art direction for The Devil's Toy Redux installation is by Judith Portier, with interface design by Alex Leduc (Deux Huit Huit). The instrument and video engine for the installation is designed by Guillaume Arseneault and Alexandre Burton (Artificial). The interactive module is designed by Félix Marzell and David Barabé (Dix au Carré) and the set designer is Jean-François Martel (Vert Glacis), with Louis-David Loyer (Unbranded Projects) as production manager.
