One Canadian soldier was killed and four others injured in a vehicle accident during Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 2014 (Ex MR 14). A Light Armoured Vehicle III (LAV III), an armoured personnel carrier, rolled over while conducting training in the Wainwright Training Area, near the town of Wainwright, Alberta, on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at approximately 11 a.m. MST.
The name of the deceased soldier is Lieutenant-Colonel Dan Bobbitt, Commanding Officer of the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (2 RCHA), based in Garrison Petawawa, Ontario.
The loss of any soldier is devastating to the military community and our condolences go out to the family and friends of Lieutenant-Colonel Bobbitt.
The four injured soldiers were also members of 2 RCHA.
Two of the injured soldiers were medically evacuated by military helicopter to civilian medical facilities in Edmonton and their condition is listed as fair.
The two other injured soldiers were treated by Canadian Armed Forces medical personnel in Garrison Wainwright and have been released.
As the accident is currently under investigation by Military Police/Canadian Forces National Investigative Service it would be inappropriate to provide further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident at this time.
