Ottawa, Ontario - 5 May 2014
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today welcomed the 21st Annual Report to the Prime Minister on the Public Service of Canada from Wayne G. Wouters, the Clerk of the Privy Council, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Public Service of Canada.
The Report highlights a number of notable achievements by the Public Service of Canada over the past year including working with the Government to respond to the train derailment disaster in Lac-Mégantic, Québec, and to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines; the historic agreement in principle on the Canada-EU Trade Agreement and the conclusion of negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement with Korea; the drawdown of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan; and efforts to improve services to Canadians, including the introduction of a single government-wide website, www.Canada.ca.
It also underscores efforts the Public Service of Canada has taken over the past year to significantly reduce costs and improve internal efficiencies, including the modernization of Government of Canada performance management and pension systems and the consolidation of e-mail and other technologies.
In the Report, the Clerk also highlighted the solid progress being made on Blueprint 2020, a vision for the future of the Public Service of Canada, driven by employee ideas, which has a strong emphasis on modernization and renewal. He outlined a number of key areas of focus for Blueprint 2020 to promote a more nimble, streamlined, accountable and technology-driven Public Service, better able to address the challenges of the future. These include enabling employees to innovate, reducing red tape, and harnessing new technologies for communication and learning.
