Project is being made possible thanks to the federal Gas Tax Fund and a partnership under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund
May 21, 2014 – Sechelt, British Columbia – Infrastructure Canada
Sechelt's innovative state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility will be known as the Sechelt Water Resource Centre.
Once construction is complete, the Centre will support a cleaner environment and provide Sechelt residents with energy-efficient wastewater treatment for years to come. Improved treatment methods also mean that odours and noise currently produced during the treatment process will be eliminated.
In addition to a contribution of $8 million from the federal Gas Tax Fund, this project is being made possible thanks to $3.2 million from the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund, with $1.6 million coming from each of the federal and provincial governments.
"Our Government has made unprecedented investments in Canada's infrastructure since 2006. We are proud to invest in important infrastructure projects, such as the construction of this new wastewater treatment plant, as we focus on creating jobs, promoting growth, and building strong, prosperous communities across Canada."
- John Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country
"The Sechelt Water Resource Centre will do much more than just treat wastewater — it will turn the end products into valuable resources. Heat will be extracted from the water to warm the building and greenhouse. Biosolids will be composted offsite, producing a Class A soil amendment. And most importantly, the Centre will produce water that meets the highest treatment standards in the Province. This reclaimed water will be used for a variety of industrial, recreational and agricultural uses."
