The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today the seizure of nearly $68,000 in currency from a traveller at the Edmonton International Airport.
On June 1, CBSA officers were conducting routine outbound checks at the Edmonton International Airport. Officers spoke to one traveller who declared $20 000 and referred him for a more in-depth examination to confirm his declaration. Upon further examination, officers found $67,840 in various currencies in the passenger’s pockets and among his belongings in his carry-on suitcase.
The man had failed to report all the currency for export to the CBSA prior to his flight. The currency was seized as suspected proceeds of crime with no terms of release.
The investigation is ongoing.

- There are no restrictions on the amount of money that can be brought into or taken out of Canada.
- Currency and other monetary instruments valued at $10,000 or more must be reported ‒ failure to report may result seizure action.
