The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to approve Ontario Power Generation Inc.'s (OPG) request to remove the regulatory hold point for the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (NGS) located in Pickering, Ontario.
The removal of the regulatory hold point authorizes OPG to proceed with operation of the Pickering NGS beyond 210,000 Equivalent Full Power Hours (EFPH), up to 247,000 EFPH. The decision follows a public hearing held on May 7, 2014, in Ottawa (ON). During the hearing, the Commission received and considered submissions from OPG and 55 intervenors, as well as CNSC staff.
The Summary Record of Proceedings and Decision of the hearing is available upon request with the Commission Secretariat. A detailed Record of Proceedings, including Reasons for Decision will be published on the CNSC website at nuclearsafety.gc.ca at a later date. The webcast of the hearing is also archived on the same site for a period of 90 days.
The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment; to implement Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.
