Contraventions Regulations: Offenders will face fines as of July 2, 2014, in Battlefields Park
June 18, 2014 – Québec – The National Battlefields Commission
The by-law amending the Contraventions Regulations and applying the bans contained in the National Battlefields Park By-Law comes into force today. Starting July 2, 2014, offenders may face fines of $75 to $200. This is to ensure that all park users can fully and safely enjoy the amenities, infrastructure and services provided throughout Battlefields Park. There will be a transitional period to inform users about the change from June 18 to July 1.
Quick facts
- The Commission’s role is to protect and preserve the legacy of Battlefields Park, which welcomes four million visitors from here and abroad annually. The NBC property, including the Plains of Abraham and Des Braves Park, is the first national historic park in Canada and the foremost gathering place in Québec City.
- From April 17 to May 1, 2013, the National Battlefields Commission held public consultations on the proposed amendments with the aim of imposing fines (between $75 and $200) for violations committed on the property in order to better meet its goals of preserving the site, maintaining its historic integrity and ensuring park safety.
- For instance, visitors are forbidden from walking a dog without a leash ($75), skateboarding ($100) or cycling on footpaths ($100), and damaging park property ($200).
- The fines are similar to those in place in Canadian national parks, national historic sites, National Capital Commission of Canada properties, and Québec City parks.
- The Commission thanks park users for their cooperation in preserving this exceptional site, protecting the natural environment, and helping ensure that all visitors can enjoy Canada’s first national historic park.
