Ottawa, June 19, 2014 – Today, the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, highlighted the Government’s legislative accomplishments in the spring sitting of Parliament.
“Through a productive and hardworking sitting of the House of Commons, including some overtime hours in recent weeks, we have delivered real results for Canadians by continuing to strengthen our economy, creating jobs and supporting families,” said Minister Van Loan.
In this sitting, the Government passed legislation designed to keep Canadian families and communities safe, and put the rights of victims first, with the passage of the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act and the introduction of the Victims Bill of Rights Act.
The Government also delivered on many of its key commitments laid out in the Speech from the Throne last year, including safeguarding the globally-recognized value of Canadian citizenship with House passage of the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act, and upholding the fairness of Canada’s electoral system with the passage of the Fair Elections Act.
This spring, the Government continued to focus on important economic measures by passing legislation implementing key elements of Economic Action Plan 2014, which:
- Supports jobs and growth by connecting Canadians with available jobs and better training the workforce of tomorrow
- Supports and protects families through measures aimed at keeping communities safer; and
- Keeps Canada on the path to return to budget balance.
"Our Government remains focused on what Canadians care most about – creating jobs and the economy. By implementing the important job-creating measures of Economic Action Plan 2014, we are building on our record that has seen the creation of over one million net new jobs since the global economic downturn," added Minister Blaney.
The House of Commons is scheduled to resume on September 15, 2014.
