Ottawa, ON, June 06, 2014 – The Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made the following statement today after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced the apprehension of the suspect sought in the massive manhunt in Moncton, NB, following the deaths of RCMP members Cst. Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, Cst David Joseph Ross, Cst Douglas James Larche, and the injuries of two others in the line of duty on Wednesday evening:
“I commend the RCMP, law enforcement members and emergency first responders, who all worked tirelessly and with the help of Moncton’s residents, to bring this terrible event to a close. Your unwavering determination in tracking and arresting this individual under the worst of circumstances during recent days, are a testament to the character and high degree of professionalism within the ranks of our law enforcement community. On behalf of our Government, I applaud you for returning peace and order to the city of Moncton.
I also wish to extend my heartfelt condolences, and prayers of support to each of the members’ families touched by recent events. I join the residents of Moncton and Canadians from across the country in wishing the injured RCMP members a speedy and full recovery. Tragic incidents such as this are a profound reminder of the risks our police officers assume every day in protecting the safety and security of all Canadians. Canadians are grateful for your dedication.”
