Minister Shea Congratulates New Conservation and Protection Officers

Twelve new graduates will play critical role in ensuring the sustainability of our Oceans’ resources

June 19, 2014 - Ottawa, Ontario

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today offered her congratulations to the 2014 graduating class of fishery officers and welcomed them to the Conservation and Protection Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

The graduates completed an 18-week classroom training program, which also included ten weeks of enforcement training at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. They will soon be making their way to Conservation and Protection field offices across Canada to complete 30 months of practical training.

Fishery Officers are responsible for the enforcement of the Fisheries Act, the Species at Risk Act, the Oceans’ Act, the Coastal Fisheries Protection Act, as well as a series of other acts and regulations that ultimately ensure the conservation and protection of Canada’s fisheries.
In addition to protecting fish and fish habitat, fishery officers promote compliance and conservation, stewardship and sustainability of fisheries. They also work to increase awareness through various public events and other relevant opportunities.
