OTTAWA, ONTARIO (June 3, 2014) – The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to extend my congratulations to this year’s winners and honourable mentions of Historica Canada’s 10th annual Aboriginal Arts & Stories awards.
These individuals are among the best and brightest young Aboriginal artists and writers in Canada. Their work shows a depth of character, talent, and hard work that has earned them the recognition they deserve. Their art and short stories explore important themes, personal stories, Aboriginal life, history, and culture.
The awards program provides Aboriginal youth from across the country with a venue where they can be creative, explore their heritage, and have their achievements celebrated nationally.
Our Government is proud to support Historica Canada’s Aboriginal Arts & Stories program. Truly this is a program that promotes and encourages greater awareness among all Canadians about our shared past and cultural identity.”
